A researcher
at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Melbourne has entered into an
agreement with an Australian biotech company, Virax Holdings,
to further develop leads for an immune-based therapy to treat
advanced prostate cancer.
Dr. Michael
Brown, a medical oncologist currently conducting a prostate cancer
study funded by a U.S. Defense Department award, said he will
work on a vaccine that uses Virax's Co-X-Gene in FPV (fowlpox
virus) vector.
"The
most important current, unmet need in the management of prostate
cancer is therapy that is effective against hormone-refractory,
metastatic disease," said Brown.
A short list
of leads has been selected for the prostate cancer development
program and these will undergo testing to determine the ultimate
candidate to bring into clinical trials, he added.
